PROFILE / CREATIVE RÉSUMÉ / 02

Photographer · Visual storyteller · Creative producer

Denerio
“Rio” Watkins

Detroit-rooted. Nationally traveled. More than a decade making visual proof that people were here—and that the room felt like something while they were.

THE WHY / MEMORY BEFORE CONTENT

I photograph what deserves to remain.

My family has roots in Detroit going back generations. I learned this city through people before I learned it through buildings: kitchens, porches, block clubs, music, community rooms, and the small gestures that make a place home.

When my grandmother Temperance died in 2021, memory stopped feeling abstract. Photographs became more than something I made for a client or posted online. They became evidence of presence—proof of how somebody looked at you, how a room held them, and how a life felt from the inside.

That changed the responsibility I bring to the camera. I do not want to extract a cool image from a person, a neighborhood, or a moment. I want to make something they can recognize themselves inside. Whether the assignment is a global brand activation or a quiet portrait, the question stays the same: will this still feel honest when the moment is gone?

“The camera lets me keep the feeling without pretending I can stop time.”
